Jazz musician of Jewish descent. His parents Josef and Florrie Mendel had been born in Libau (Liepāja) in Latvia and came to Norway via Ireland in 1911. With their five children they moved from Trondheim to Oslo during the 1930s. Harry Mendel played saxophone in several Jazz and Swing bands in Oslo. On 26th October 1942 he was arrested as persecuted jew (“Jödeaksjonen”), imprisoned in Bredtveit prison from 30th October 1942 until 26th November 1942 when he was deported to Auschwitz with the steam ship Donau. Immediately after his arrival he was murdered together with his sisteer Esther on 1st December 1942.
