Rowland Charles Wentworth Greenberg

Jazz musician (trumpet) and bicycle champion. After a trip to England (1938-39) he became a central figure in Oslo’s jazz scene, founding his own Rowland Greenberg Swing Band in 1939 with Arvid Gram Paulsen on saxophon, Lulle Kristoffersen on piano and Pete Brown on drums, as well as his Rowland Greenberg Rytmeorkester (1940-44) with Gordon Franklin on tenor saxophone, Arvid Gram Paulsen on alto saxophone, Robert Normann on guitar, Kjell Bjørnstad, Frank Hansen, and Lyder Vengbo on trombone and Fred Lange-Nielsen on bass. He was arrested on 21st July 1943 and released on 27th July. On 27th November 1944 he was arrested again and sent to KZ Grini (#16002) the next day. After Norway’s liberation he continued to maintain an international career as jazz artist.
