He studied music theory with Johan Ludwig Mowinckel (1922-24), vocal and choir instrumentation in Stockholm (1938) and London (1939). After pursuing a career as a composer he had his debut as a conductor in 1944, leading numerous amateur und professional choirs throughout his life.
