At the early age of 12 Karlsen he became an organist pupil of Arild Sandvold, graduated at Oslo’s conservatory (1931) and began a successful international career as an organist and pianist. In 1937 he became associated with the Philharmonic Society in Oslo for nearly three decades and diversified his professions to conducting, teaching and composing.
