She was the daughter of the music teacher and conductor Paul Knutsen Barstad Sandvik, sister of musicologist Ole Mørk Sandvik and sister-in-law of Elisabeth Munthe-Kaas. She studied with Gina Hille in 1898, started a career as a singer and worked as a teacher and vocal coach.
