He began to study at the Oslo conservatory (1908-13), continued to study theory with Geburg Aasland and Catharinus Elling (1913-17) and further with Eyvind Alnæs and Otto Olsson in Stockholm. After that he went to Berlin (1919-20) and to Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger. Since 1925 he worked as an organist, conductor and music teacher in Halden.
