Born in Elisabethgrad (Ukraine) Joseph Hirsch Schechter had studied at the Dresden conservatory. In 1919 he came to Norway where he became the first violinist at Bergen’s symphony orchestra Harmonien (1920-28), since 1924 also as the second concert master. In the late 1930s he also became a member of Bergen’s radio ensemble.
On 26th October 1942 he was arrested as a persecuted Jew and sent to camp Berg outside of Tønsberg. One month later he was deported with the steam boat Donau on 26th November 1942 to Auschwitz via Stettin. He died in Auschwitz on 14th January 1943.
